THE IGNORANT SCHOLAR

John 3:12 KJV
If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

Dear Believer,

Nicodemus was a scholar and a member of the highest body of religious rulers in Israel. That he was knowledgeable about many things wasn’t in doubt. However, All he had ever known paled into insignificance upon having a conversation with a young Man named Jesus.

Jess spoke of being born one more time; that was nonsense to the great scholar. Whoever heard of someone going back into his mother’s womb after he was already sixty-five years of age to be born another time?

Jesus spoke about other things that baffled this scholar. The more he heard, the more confused he became.

Then Jesus teased him, “Are you a master in Israel and yet don’t know these simple things? if I am telling you things using simple language, how will you understand if I begin to tell you about heavenly things?” (John 3:10, 12).

Dr. Nicodemus had a problem that is still plaguing mankind today: he was attempting to understand spiritual and heavenly realities with physical and earthly knowledge. It is very much like applying the laws of physics to solve your marriage issues. As you cannot run your marriage by principles of mechanics or aerodynamics, so can you not understand spiritual realities with physical, emotional or natural laws.

Spiritual matters are only understood by the spiritual person.

Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The Believer who walks in the Spirit is a powerful being. He can’t be figured out by casual observers and the wise men of this world, yet he can understand those people and place them well.

But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is judged by no one.

Believer, no matter how knowledgeable you are about anything, endeavor to relate to things of this world by first understanding the spiritual principles guiding them.

For the Believer, nothing makes sense without the spiritual. The chaos brewing everywhere in the world can only make any sense when we understand the spiritual principles behind it.

More importantly, we can only understand God and His word if we are spiritual.
